A little about the ideas behind the drawings:

In light of Earth Day, I wanted to make a series of drawings that explores the inner world of animals in early spring. Are they emerging from hibernation, excited to gather again? Maybe they're popping apricots and just-ripe cherries in their beaks or, hell, even baskets. Drawing animals this way gives me such a joyful view into the lives of the creatures with whom we share a world. I love to see them as harvesting from the same trees as us– nibbling the same fruit. In this series I also wanted to play with letterforms. In the “Earth” piece I pulled inspiration from a lot of Medieval lettering and continued exploring an interest in lettering as a pictorial, decorative element to accompany and even frame an illustration. I found a lot of medieval illuminations that centered around a fruiting tree, often featuring a young, acrobatic farmer that would shake the fruit to a companion below. Pulling from some of these sources, I wanted to imagine creatures from around the world clustered in the branches of an imagined tree, gathering a spring bounty.
